Welcome to AshenHof. We are dedicated to producing robust, high-quality champion bloodlines with the goal of improving the overall health and longevity of the Bernese Mountain Dog breed. Each breeding pair is carefully selected for traits that will strengthen and refine our lines. Our commitment to Bernese Mountain Dogs goes beyond a business or hobby — it is our passion. From day one, our dogs receive attentive care and affection; temperament is among our highest priorities.
Bernese Mountain Dogs trace their roots to the Swiss Alps, where they served as versatile working dogs for farmers in the canton of Bern for over 2,000 years. Brought to Switzerland by Roman soldiers, these dogs were bred to herd cattle, pull carts, and act as loyal watchdogs across the rugged alpine terrain.
By the late 19th century, the breed faced near extinction as industrialization reduced the need for farm dogs. It was Swiss breed enthusiast Franz Schertenleib who helped revive interest, and in 1907, the Berner Sennenhund Club was formally established. The breed was officially recognized and its standards set, preserving the lineage that had worked Swiss farmland for centuries.
Today, the Bernese Mountain Dog is celebrated as much for its gentle, affectionate temperament as for its striking tri-color coat. A breed shaped by purpose and refined by dedication — the Berner carries centuries of heritage in every measured, dignified step.
At AshenHof Berners, ethical breeding is rooted in respect for the breed's Swiss heritage. Every pairing honors the Bernese Mountain Dog's centuries-old legacy — prioritizing soundness of body, steadiness of temperament, and long-term vitality over trend or convenience.
To breed a Berner is to act as a steward of something greater than a single litter. It is a promise we take seriously — to the breed, and to every family we serve.
